PAPUA - Amidst the breathtaking yet challenging terrain of Papua, the Indonesian National Army (TNI) stands at the forefront, actively supporting the acceleration of development in the region. With the mandate of Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 9 of 2020, the TNI plays a crucial role not only as a guardian of security but also as a facilitator of development and a bridge for communication between the government and the local communities. Inpres 9/2020 outlines three primary tasks for the TNI in Papua: maintaining security, assisting local governments in providing basic services, and fostering inclusive social communication. These goals are carried out through the deployment of Task Forces (Satgas) across various regions of Papua, where they contribute to establishing regional stability and creating a conducive environment for development.
Security is recognized as the cornerstone of successful development in Papua, and the TNI fully understands this responsibility. They continuously strive to create a safe and stable environment, essential for the progress of the region. However, maintaining security in Papua is no easy feat. The Armed Separatist Group (KSB), formerly known as the Free Papua Movement (OPM), remains a significant threat to peace and order.
An alarming incident underscored the dangers posed by separatist groups. On August 5, 2024, OPM members were responsible for the murder of Glen Malcolm Conning, a New Zealand national and helicopter pilot for PT Intan Angkasa Air Service. The tragic event not only disrupted stability but also endangered foreign nationals contributing to Papua's development.
In the face of such violence, the TNI has shown unwavering commitment to protecting the people of Papua and foreigners alike. Just one day after the murder, the TNI successfully evacuated the bodies of the victims, including Pilot Glen, health workers, teachers, and even toddlers, without any prior requests from the victim’s family or the New Zealand Government. This humanitarian action stands as a testament to the TNI’s dedication to the well-being of all.
Another notable achievement was the rescue of Susi Air pilot Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens on September 21, 2024. His safe release after being held hostage for weeks exemplifies the TNI's capability and commitment to protecting citizens and maintaining peace.
Major General TNI Lucky Avianto, Commander of Habema, remarked, “Security is a fundamental pillar for the realization of the Papuan people's welfare. Both TNI and Polri fully understand this and work tirelessly to ensure security throughout Papua. We don’t only focus on combating separatist groups, but also actively engage with the community through social and humanitarian initiatives. Building strong relationships with local communities is key to fostering synergy in maintaining security and supporting the acceleration of development.”
With such contributions, the TNI continues to demonstrate that they are not merely a force for security, but also a central player in advancing the development and welfare of the people of Papua. (Red192)
