PAPUA - In the heart of Papua’s breathtaking yet challenging terrain, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) stand as the vanguard of progress, playing a pivotal role in accelerating development and ensuring security. Under the mandate of Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 9 of 2020, the TNI is not merely a guardian of peace but also a catalyst for development and a bridge of communication between the government and local communities. This directive entrusts the TNI with three crucial missions: safeguarding security, assisting local governments in delivering essential services, and fostering inclusive social communication. These responsibilities are executed through the deployment of task forces (satgas) across Papua, proactively contributing to regional stability and development.

Security: The Foundation of Papua’s Progress

A secure and stable environment is the cornerstone of successful development. The TNI fully understands this imperative and works relentlessly to establish peace and order for all communities. However, security threats persist, particularly from Armed Separatist Groups (KSB), formerly known as the Free Papua Movement (OPM).

One tragic incident that underscored this threat was the murder of Glen Malcolm Conning, a New Zealand pilot for PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, on August 5, 2024. This act of violence not only disrupted regional stability but also endangered foreign nationals contributing to Papua’s development.

In a swift response, on August 6, 2024, the TNI successfully evacuated the bodies of Pilot Glen, along with health workers, teachers, and even toddlers—not because of external requests, but purely as an act of humanitarian duty.

Additionally, the TNI’s heroic rescue of Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens, a Susi Air pilot held hostage by separatists, on September 21, 2024, demonstrated exceptional skill, commitment, and resolve. This operation showcased the TNI’s unwavering dedication to protecting both Indonesian and foreign citizens.

A Unified Effort for a Better Papua

Major General Lucky Avianto, Commander of Habema, reaffirmed the TNI’s mission in Papua:

"Security is the fundamental pillar of Papua’s prosperity. The TNI and Polri fully understand this and remain steadfast in maintaining stability across the region. Beyond countering separatist threats, we actively engage in social and humanitarian initiatives to foster strong relationships with the community. Through these efforts, we aim to build lasting synergy in ensuring security and accelerating development in Papua."

With a clear vision and unwavering dedication, the TNI continues to lead Papua towards peace, security, and progress proving that they are not just defenders, but true agents of change.
