PAPUA - Amid the breathtaking yet challenging landscape of Papua, the Indonesian National Army (TNI) plays a pivotal role in accelerating regional development. Carrying out the mandate of Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 9 of 2020, TNI has proven itself to be more than just a security force—it serves as a development facilitator and a bridge of communication between the government and the people.
This directive empowers TNI to undertake three core missions in Papua: maintaining security, supporting local governments in providing essential services, and fostering inclusive social engagement. These missions are realized through the deployment of task forces (Satgas) across Papua, ensuring a stable and conducive environment for development.
Security as the Foundation of Progress
TNI recognizes that security stability is the backbone of development. Without a safe and peaceful environment, economic growth, education, and healthcare initiatives cannot flourish. However, threats from Armed Separatist Groups (KSB), formerly known as the Free Papua Movement (OPM), remain a major challenge.
One tragic incident was the brutal murder of Glen Malcolm Conning, a New Zealand helicopter pilot working for PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, on Monday, August 5, 2024. This act of violence not only threatened local stability but also endangered foreign nationals who contribute to Papua’s progress.
TNI’s Swift and Humanitarian Response
TNI has repeatedly demonstrated its unwavering commitment to humanitarian missions. On Tuesday, August 6, 2024, TNI successfully evacuated the bodies of Pilot Glen, health workers, teachers, and toddlers without any formal request from the victims' families or the New Zealand Government. This act of pure humanitarian duty showcases TNI’s dedication to protecting lives.
Furthermore, the rescue of Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens, the Susi Air pilot held hostage by separatists on September 21, 2024, was a milestone in TNI’s efforts to safeguard both Indonesian and foreign citizens. This remarkable achievement highlights TNI’s strong capability and commitment to national and international security.
A Unified Effort for Papua’s Future
Habema Commander, Major General TNI Lucky Avianto, emphasized the importance of security as the foundation for Papua’s welfare.
“Security is the key to ensuring the well-being of Papuans. TNI and Polri fully understand this and continuously strive to maintain stability across Papua. Beyond military operations against separatist groups, TNI actively engages with local communities through social and humanitarian initiatives. By fostering strong relationships with the people, we can build a solid synergy that safeguards security and accelerates development in Papua.”
As the vanguard of peace and progress, TNI remains committed to protecting, serving, and building Papua’s future. With unwavering dedication, TNI ensures that Papua moves forward in harmony, stability, and prosperity.
