TNI as the Vanguard: A Real Contribution to Accelerating Development in Papua

1 month ago 32

PAPUA - Amidst the breathtaking yet challenging landscapes of Papua, the Indonesian National Army (TNI) stands unwavering as the vanguard in driving welfare development. Carrying out the mandate of Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 9 of 2020, the TNI’s role extends beyond securing the region—it serves as a facilitator of development and a vital bridge of communication between the government and the community.

Inpres 9/2020 provides the legal foundation for the TNI to execute three primary missions in Papua: ensuring security, supporting local governments in delivering essential services, and fostering inclusive social communication. These missions are realized through the deployment of task forces (Satgas) across various regions, proactively contributing to regional stability and progress.

Security: The Pillar of Papua’s Development

A safe and stable environment is a fundamental prerequisite for successful development in Papua. Recognizing this, the TNI continuously works to ensure the region remains conducive for growth and prosperity. However, security challenges persist—particularly the threat posed by Armed Separatist Groups (KSB), formerly known as the Free Papua Movement (OPM).

One stark example of their violent actions was the brutal murder of Glen Malcolm Conning, a New Zealand pilot for PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, on Monday (5/8/2024). These acts of violence not only disrupt regional stability but also endanger the lives of foreigners who play a crucial role in Papua’s ongoing development efforts.

TNI’s Humanitarian Response: A Commitment Beyond Borders

The TNI's commitment to security and humanity was evident on Tuesday (6/8/2024), when they successfully evacuated the remains of Pilot Glen, along with health workers, teachers, and toddlers—without any prior request from the victim’s family or the New Zealand government. This action was purely driven by humanitarian concern and the TNI’s dedication to protecting civilians.

Moreover, the TNI’s successful rescue of Susi Air Pilot Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens on September 21, 2024, is a testament to their unwavering commitment and operational excellence. This remarkable achievement underscores the TNI’s capability to safeguard both Indonesian and foreign nationals against threats in the region.

Strengthening Security Through Community Engagement

Habema Commander, Major General TNI Lucky Avianto, emphasized that security is the cornerstone of Papua’s development.

"Ensuring security is essential to improving the welfare of the Papuan people. The TNI and Polri understand this responsibility deeply and remain committed to maintaining stability throughout the region. Beyond addressing separatist threats, the TNI actively engages with communities through social and humanitarian initiatives. By fostering strong relationships with the local population, we aim to create a powerful synergy that sustains peace and accelerates Papua’s development, " stated Major General Avianto.
